Retinal Detachment

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is a serious eye emergency that requires prompt medical attention to prevent permanent vision loss. At Dr. Akbar Eye Care, we specialize in providing comprehensive care for retinal detachment, focusing on early detection, advanced treatment options, and personalized management plans to preserve vision and improve overall eye health.

Understanding Retinal Detachment: Retinal detachment occurs when the retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye, pulls away from its normal position. This separation can occur suddenly (acute) or gradually (chronic) and is often associated with a tear or hole in the retina that allows fluid to accumulate beneath it, leading to detachment.

Causes and Risk Factors: Several factors can contribute to retinal detachment, including:

  • Trauma or Injury: Direct trauma to the eye can cause tears or holes in the retina.
  • Aging: As we age, the vitreous gel inside the eye may shrink and pull away from the retina, increasing the risk of tears.
  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Individuals with severe nearsightedness are at higher risk due to the elongation of the eyeball.
  • Previous Eye Surgery or Conditions: Previous cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy, or other eye conditions can increase the likelihood of retinal detachment.

Symptoms: Symptoms of retinal detachment may include:

  • Sudden onset of floaters (spots or lines in the field of vision)
  • Flashes of light in the affected eye
  • Blurred vision
  • A shadow or curtain-like effect over the visual field
  • Loss of central or peripheral vision
